With summer just around the corner, it's time to start planning your Fort Collins ice cream route. There's no better first stop than Walrus Ice Cream! Walrus has been a staple in the Fort Collins community since 1987 and create their ice cream and treats all by hand at their store on Mountain Avenue. Their 29 flavors are ever-rotating; if you're brave enough, try the mystery flavor. You never know what it might be!
We spoke with Lisa Paugh, owner of Walrus, to learn more about this historic ice cream spot.
What do you love about Fort Collins?
I love living in Fort Collins, the way this town comes together to support its local business is like no other place. I love that it is a big town with a small town feel.
What are your top 3 favorite activities to do in Fort Collins?
- Thursday Night Live concert series in Old Town Square
- The flowers in Downtown Fort Collins
- Eating ice cream!
What "can't miss" activity/restaurant/place would you tell a first-time visitor to go?
You can't miss the Poudre Canyon, Silver Grill, Vern's and The Mishawaka, a riverside concert venue that's up the Poudre River.
What makes Walrus unique?
Walrus Ice Cream is local to Old Town Fort Collins for 37 years, we make everything including our ice cream mix in our store daily. We make an all natural base with no additives or preservatives, offering vegan and gluten free ice creams and cones.
What is the story behind how you got involved with Walrus?
We bought Walrus in 1999 and have been running it for the last 25 years. We are hands on owners and love turning out wonderful employees into the workforce.
What do you want visitors to experience at Walrus?
I would like them to sample as many flavors as they would like, embrace the positive atmosphere, experience our ghost and enjoy our wonderful staff and amazing ice cream. A seat on our outside patio does not disappoint.
