The outdoors are one of Fort Collins' greatest assets. From hiking and biking all the way to water sports and cross country skiing, Fort Collins has it all. It's up to us to make sustainable choices that help reserve our natural playgrounds. It's no secret that the fashion industry has a negative impact on the environment, but a local Fort Collins company, Tellus, is doing everything they can to change that. A newer addition to downtown Fort Collins shopping, Tellus is a sustainable clothing and outdoor gear company that donates 100% of their net profits to initiatives that help to combat climate change and uses sustainable materials to make their gear.

We spoke with Joe and Melissa Basta, founders of Tellus, to learn more about Tellus and why they love Fort Collins.

What do you love about Fort Collins

Fort Collins is an amazing community that we love. It’s a place with like-minded people raising families while enjoying all the outdoor activities in the area, and Colorado as a whole. Appreciation for the outdoors, nature and caring for wilderness is a commonality we see throughout the community.

What are your top 3 favorite activities to do in Fort Collins?

  1. Family hikes or walks along the Poudre

  2. Dining Downtown

  3. Relaxing at local breweries

What "can't miss" activity/restaurant/place would you tell a first-time visitor to go?

Hike Horsetooth Mountain Trail or the trails in Lory State Park. Bicycle the amazing, paved paths around town or the single-track trails in the foothill open spaces. Grab a milkshake at Union, some pie at Ginger & Baker, or tacos at Illegal Pete’s. Take your kids to play in Spring Canyon Park, then watch the sunset from the edge of Horsetooth Reservoir.

What makes Tellus unique?

Tellus puts the planet over profits. Sustainability is at the forefront of everything we do. We’re rethinking how clothing is made to bring about a better planet, stronger communities and a brighter future. What is the story behind how Tellus got its start?

Tellus is an innovative outdoor apparel company with a powerful mission — to lead the outdoor apparel industry as the foremost sustainability champion. We are committed to making products using only recycled and organic materials and reinvesting 100% of net profits to vital environmental initiatives.

What do you want visitors to experience at Tellus?

We want visitors to feel the friendly Fort Collins vibe in our shop and when they are exploring wearing Tellus clothing. We hope to inspire visitors to ‘Adventure with Purpose’ — enjoy the outdoors and everything it offers while also doing what they can to help preserve it.
