We spoke with Khloé Wanless, one of the owners of Tattered Saddle, to learn more about this unique western experience.
What do you love about Fort Collins?
As someone who has lived in many different towns and cities on this side of the Mississippi, I love Fort Collins’ sense of LIFE! There is energy everywhere and something exciting is always going on for people who are into pretty much any hobby! From music and art festivals to comedy shows, great restaurants and places to hike and camp, Fort Collins really does seem to have a scene for everyone!
What are your top 3 favorite activities to do in Fort Collins?
- Riding horses, of course! While we don't actually ride horses in Fort Collins proper, there are plenty of beautiful hiking and riding trails just a 35-minute drive from city center.
- Catching a comedy show at The Comedy Fort.
- Enjoying a movie or a silly event at The Lyric Cinema.
What "can't miss" activity/restaurant/place would you tell a first-time visitor to go?
As outdoor enthusiasts we, of course, suggest that everyone we know spend as much time as possible in the public lands surrounding Fort Collins. Whether it is a hike near Horsetooth Reservoir, a horseback ride in and around the Roosevelt National Forest, or a rafting trip down the Poudre River!
What makes Tattered Saddle unique?
We specialize in horseback experiences for folks who want something more than just the usual “one hour walking around on a horseback.” We are here to facilitate your outdoor horseback adventure! Whether you want to ride to the top of a mountain to watch the sunset, gallop through fields, or enjoy a ride to a secluded charcuterie picnic, we’ve got it covered.
How did Tattered Saddle get its start?
My husband and I have been going on really cool horseback adventures of our own for years, and we decided that we wanted to make those unique experiences accessible to others - even if they don’t have a lot of prior horseback experience. We partnered with Gordon Creek RV Park in Livermore because they have a beautiful property right next to the national forest, where folks can camp or rent a cabin if they want to stay close to the horses.
What do you want visitors to experience at Tattered Saddle?
The real world! Horses, nature, a sunset, a delicious charcuterie box, maybe? With technology and social media running so much of our lives these days, we believe in getting outdoors to enjoy the clean mountain air, vitamin D from the sun, and - most of all - an experience worth putting your cell phone down for (Except while taking that awesome photo on the trail!) We want our guests to get a healthy dose of real sensations and real life!
