"Through Warhol's Lens," highlights a recent gift from the Andy Warhol Foundation Photographic Legacy Program of photographs by the legendary Pop artist. To honor the 20th anniversary of the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, in 2007 the University Art Museum became one of a number of American educational institutions to receive a gift of original Polaroid and black and white photographs by Andy Warhol. The program’s purpose is to provide broad public access to an important but little known body of Warhol’s work. The Colorado State gift includes Warhol’s photographs of notable public personalities such as Martha Graham, Truman Capote, Mick Jagger, Paloma Picasso, Edward Kennedy and John Denver.
During the span of the Warhol exhibit, the Fort Collins community and visitors are invited to the University Art Museum to blog about Andy Warhol: share your memories of Andy Warhol’s visit; share your thoughts about the time period in which Warhol worked; be a critic for fifteen minutes (or just a few) and respond to questions about Andy Warhol’s photography posed in text panels throughout the exhibit.
The second exhibit, Warhol's Flowers, features ten original large silk screened works on loan from the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. The Flowers are important images from Warhol’s body of work; the first use of the image, in 1964, was the focus of Warhol’s first solo exhibition at the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York. The paintings, based on a photograph of hibiscus blossoms, were replicated in psychedelic, fluorescent pigments manufactured by the Day-Glo Corporation. The exhibition, Andy Warhol’s Flowers compliments the vibrant display of colors in the neighboring Annual Flower Trial Gardens at Colorado State University.

The Fort Collins Museum of Contemporary Art will present an exhibition that highlights the variety and quality of Fort Collins art collections. Fort Collins Collects, curated by FCMOCA’s Executive Director, Marianne Lorenz, demonstrates the breadth and depth of local collections and allows visitors a “peek” into the lives and passions of the collectors. “This exhibition has something for everyone,” says Lorenz, “from mid-century decorative arts to old master drawings and contemporary sculpture, Fort Collins Collects should appeal to a variety of tastes and interests.”
The idea for the exhibition was born out of a routine visit by Lorenz to the home of Melissa Katsimpalis, who is the President of the FCMOCA Board:
“I was sitting in the living room and just as I was about to put my cup of tea down, I realized that the table next to me was a rare and important side table designed by Edward Wormley for Dunbar Furniture in the late 1950’s. I immediately recognized it from the signature Tiffany tiles that cover the table top. I began to wonder how many other treasures such as this are in the community and are worthy of sharing with our museum audiences?” said Lorenz.
Early in the process, Lorenz decided that objects chosen for the exhibition would not be limited to “contemporary” fine or decorative arts. “I wanted to include collectors who have a broad range of interests and tastes—I did not want to leave anything out because of the date a work of art was made—I wanted to include the best from an assortment of periods and art interests—I think this is what will make the show accessible to everyone—whether or not they are interested in contemporary art.”
Ultimately, the exhibition came to include some contemporary art “gems,” such as a large Dave Yust painting from the collection of Gary and Carol Ann Hixon as well as a rare 19th century drawing by English artist Edward Francisco Burney from the collection of Larry Hartford and Torleif Tandstad.
