Twelve local artists will take to the street on January 27 and 28 to paint the widows of the Walnut Street businesses with unique designs that reflect the local character of each establishment. The public is invited to park for free in one of the downtown parking garages and walk Walnut Street to watch the artists create their work. Pick up a voting card and parking coupons at any Walnut Street business and cast a vote for your favorite artist. Voting period ends February 15th with cash prizes for first, second and third place being awarded at the February 16th Foodie Walk downtown.
For those enjoying first Friday gallery walk on February 2, the Windows on Walnut Street installation will add interest to the evening. All public voting cards collected will be entered into a drawing for a giant Shop Walnut gift basket featuring a collective sampling from all the businesses impacted by the construction: Welsh Rabbit Cheese Bistro, La Luz Mexican Grill, Walnut Creek & The Merchant Room, Happy Lucky’s Teahouse, Old Firehouse Books, Curiosities Gifts, Salus Bath & Body, Nature’s Own, The Right Card, Hearn’s Shoes, Studio Be, Spoons, The Wright Life, and Magnolia Moon Boutique.
Shop Walnut to support local business! Shop Walnut is a coalition of local small Old Town businesses who are taking a proactive approach to mitigate the economic impacts of the Walnut Street closure to replace 100 year old water pipes, expected to last from January through March 2018. Extended street closures can result in a 30-50% drop in sales when customers perceive difficulty finding parking and accessing buildings, even though sidewalks are open and all businesses are accessible. The group launched www.ShopWalnutStreet.com as a community webpage to keep customers engaged in the life of the street.
Shop Walnut businesses are offering free parking garage coupons with a purchase to mitigate the impact of the street closure. These coupons add an additional free hour to the one already provided by the Remington and Civic Center (LaPorte) parking garages, both one block from Walnut.
