Picture books (read-aloud, fully-illustrated stories for children up to age 8) are perennial favorites of children, parents and teachers, but their short text makes them especially challenging to write. In this class you'll learn what types of stories work best in the picture book format, how to create characters children can identify with, page-turning plot devices, and what should be left for the illustrator. Come with a story idea, and leave with a blueprint for your first draft.

Instructor Greg Campbell is a published author of three nonfiction books (and a fourth in development) and 20-year journalist who specializes in narrative nonfiction. His writing has been described as being like "PJ O'Rourke's more serious younger brother" and as having "a persona that's half Jimmy Stewart, half Indiana Jones."

Photograms have a long history going back to the cut paper silhouette portraits of Etienne de Silhouette, lace studies made on hand-applied black and white emulsions by Fox Talbot, to the early 20th century experimental studies of Christian Schad and Man Ray. Recently, Photograms have gained renewed popularity because of their low-tech approach and fidelity to traditional silver processes.
This class will provide the participants the opportunity to create photograms on black and white photo paper. In the darkroom we will use a variety of approaches and techniques to create more than a record of an object. With objects, which students will provide, we will double expose, multilayer, and apply movement during an exposure. Working on the enlarger stand as well as in the negative carrier will give the student vent to creativity and an understanding of nuances in black and white image making.
Suggested items for Photograms are objects with interesting form, translucency, transparency and texture such as postage stamps, plant life, perfume bottles, gyroscope, crystal, prism, feathers, marbles, lace/ fabrics, fruits/vegetables, favorite objects with photogram potential, paper sculpture (origami), and kitchen tools (cheese grater).
